Announcing our annual regatta, 28 July

Canandaigua Yacht Club (located in the Finger lakes region of upstate New York) has formed a new small-dinghy, tactical racing and day sailing fleet, and is looking for individuals and families that are interested in this – we currently have 11 boats, and are looking for more! The fleet employs the Vanguard 15.

The Vanguard 15 (V15) is a well-designed, well-built, simple and fast centerboard boat that appeals to families sailing together, to people learning to sail, and to experienced sailboat racers.

In the fifteen years since its introduction, the class has grown to 36 fleets and over 1000 boats nationwide. Not only is it finding its way into “learn-to-sail” programs, it is also becoming a popular boat for high school sailing programs and college racing.

The V15 fills a gap in CYC’s racing program: it is a two person centerboard boat that can be sailed by everyone from a pair of teen-agers to three or four adults out for a pleasure sail. Often a parent and a child will race the boat as a team. This positions it nicely between the Sunfish and the keel boat fleets.

With a main and a jib, but no spinnaker, and a price ranging from $2000 (used) to $6800 (new), it is an ideal boat for those just entering the world of sailing and sailboat racing.

Our fleet is starting into its fourth year in 2009, with excellent participation (and our first regatta) in 2006. We have 11 boats, and look forward to continuing to grow. We are very interested in new members, and will go out of our way to make sure anyone interested gets all of the information they can, as well as getting an opportunity to sail the boat, of course! If you are interested, stop down at Canandaigua Yacht club any Sunday afternoon and talk to us!

The fleet itself is not only for racers – each Sunday we will have a “tailgate party”, and classes will be made available on an “as needed” basis teaching everything from basic V15 sailing skills, to racing skills and understanding the racing rules. In addition, several fleet members come with good boat repair and rigging experience. Simply put, both fun and help is near by!

Are you interested in learning more about the V15? If you are, please let me know – see the Contact Page.

Also, the best word is word of mouth – if anyone knows anyone in the area that might be interested in the V15, please tell them about this web site, or send me their email and phone numbers.

Sincerely,

The CYC V15 Fleet
